So, we’ve been doing something very grown-up lately, house hunting. And not the easy kind where you find a perfect, already-finished place with shiny floors and zero weird smells. No, we’ve been looking at proper fixer-uppers. The kind where you walk in and immediately go, “Oh, this has potential,” while also mentally calculating how many skips it’ll take to clear out the carpet from 1982.

It’s a bit chaotic, a bit exciting, and definitely a bit terrifying. This new DIY bug has got the entire family and suddenly we’re like, ‘yeah we could do that between us!’ Who do we think we are?

We’ve always loved the idea of making a place our own. Something with character, maybe a few quirks, and a decent bit of space. The downside, of course, is that most of these charming homes come with ancient radiators, boilers that look like they’ve seen a world war, and heating systems that sound like they’re trying to communicate with the dead.

Which brings me neatly to the very grown-up topic of heating. Specifically, the boiler. I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to care so much about boilers. But when you’re viewing a house and the estate agent says “the heating works” with a nervous smile, suddenly, boilers become your new obsession.

We’ve been browsing boiler options and one that’s come up as something we’d genuinely consider is the Vitodens gas boiler by Viessmann. They’re known for being energy efficient, reliable, and modern-looking, which is exactly what we need when replacing whatever noisy relic is hiding in the corner of these houses.

It’s one of those boring grown-up choices that future us will be thankful for. A good boiler means warm showers, cosy evenings, and not dreading your energy bills every winter. And if you’re fixing up a place, getting the heating right from the start is probably smarter than panic-buying when it breaks mid-January.

Right now, we’re in that early stage of planning, lists, Pinterest boards, a mood board with exactly four colours and a hundred plants, but the one thing we keep coming back to is getting the foundations right. Roof, windows, insulation, heating. All the stuff nobody puts on Instagram but ends up being the difference between “cosy forever home” and “why are we wearing jumpers indoors?”
