How to Prepare Your Garden for Winter

Now that we’re making our way into the colder months, you will probably spend less time attending to your garden. If you’ve not already, it’s a good idea to have a final clean up and to prepare your garden for the change in weather. Here’s a checklist that we’ve created alongside a garden gate company in London to help. patio paint light grey large Clean Up With the stormy weather that we’re used to here in the UK, it’s a good idea to tidy away any clutter that you have ahead of winter. Garden tools, toys, and anything else that can also potentially get swept up by the wind. Not only will it protect those items but also reduce the likelihood of your fences being damaged.  Not only will it protect those items but also reduce the likelihood of your fences being damaged. If you’re thinking ahead to next year’s lawn care, you could also reach out to a turf company in Fort Worth for professional advice on maintaining healthy grass through the colder months. Debris It’s a good idea to rake up and discard any debris that you have lying around as it will create less room for pests to hide. Cuttings Another thing that you can do is collect plant cuttings. You can grow them indoors until they are ready to be planted outside. Apply Mulch Mulch is organic plant matter that is put on top of soil and compost to improve its fertility, health and reduce weed growth. In the winter, it provides insulation and protects roots from constant freezing and thawing. Cover Up Any Garden Furniture Garden furniture is designed for the outdoors, however, not all sets are made equally. Plastic is the best as it’s the most weather resistant and wood, although strong and durable, can warp over time. To protect yours, we recommend a shelter or a cover of some sort.  Plant Evergreens If you still want a pretty garden to look out at, you can plant evergreens. These are plants that are able to withstand and survive frosty temperatures. Pond Nets Ponds are a beautiful garden feature but can be pretty high maintenance. To make life easier on yourself you can add a pond net. This will collect falling leaves that spoil pond water and block pumps. Collect Old Fallen Leaves Fallen leaves can be recycled and used as fresh organic matter to add structure to soil. All you need is a decent pile, a spot of the garden that you don’t mind using, wire mesh and wooden stakes.  Potting If you have plant pots they will also need to be emptied unless you intend on keeping them indoors. These can be stored away, ready to be used again in the spring.
