4 Reasons Gen Z Will Make Amazing Grandparents

When I was younger, people used to look at the tattoos and piercings of myself and my friends and ask what they would look like when I was a grandparent. I would always respond that every other old lady would look just like I did so it didn’t matter, but as I have grown older I have come to realise that this couldn’t be more true. In fact, what a grandparent looks like is changing overall, due to new trends in the age a person becomes a grandparent, the behaviours of different generations and new mindsets becoming the norm. Here are four reasons that Gen Z will make amazing grandparents.

Growing up with technological advancements

While every generation has technical advancements, none have been quite as rapid as those that have happened while Millenials and Gen Z have grown up. Because of the ever-changing nature of technology in the 21st century, young people are accustomed to learning new systems and exploring technology until they are able to understand it for themselves. This would allow Gen Z grandparents to relate to their grandchildren on a deeper level as they would be able to participate and bond over new technologies.

Understanding rapidly changing social norms

One of the best things about becoming an adult in this generation is that you are living through the world learning and changing its norms surrounding sexuality, gender and more. This means that the Grandparents of the future would be able to support the younger generation in the exploration of their identities, providing a safe and non-judgemental space to discover what truly makes them happy.

Comfortable practising mindfulness

Mindfulness is everywhere right now, mostly being used as a tool for therapy, in managing depression and anxiety. Even outside of therapeutic situations, an emphasis on mindfulness is prevalent across social media, and this level of awareness and emotional regulation is a trait that would be incredibly useful in a grandparent that you would turn to for level-headed and unbiased support.

Advice on entrepreneurship

While our own grandparents may have been able to walk out of one job on a Friday and in to a new one on Monday, the employment market has totally changed and young adults are now more comfortable finding ways to make money outside of the usual 9-5 grind, by taking matters into their own hands. This means that they have grown up being self-assured and with a business mindset, which is incredibly useful for providing support and advice.   It’s strange to think of the younger adults of today someday becoming grandparents. What qualities do you think they would have? How do you think they would look? Share your ideas in the comments below.
