There are no two ways about it – having work done on your home can be a very stressful experience. You have to share your home with strangers for an amount of time, there is lots of noise and dust everywhere, and nothing is where you expect it to be. If you are able to take a trip or dive into a project at work that is going to keep you busy and out of the house at all hours, now is definitely the time to do it.Ensure that your floors are protected

Check your insurance cover
Before you start doing any work to your home, it is important to speak to your home insurance provider and let them know exactly what is going to be happening. They can ensure that all of the works will be covered by insurance incase there are any unexpected situations that arise, or advise you how to improve your cover temporarily to keep your home safe.Make a plan for your daily meals
There is a good chance that your kitchen is going to be out of service for at least a portion of the duration of the works that are going on, so coming up with a plan is a good way to minimise the impact of the disruption. If your kitchen is going to be completely unusable then one option is to talk to your lead contractor about making a plan to install a temporary kitchen space, which is plumbed in to maximise its usability. Other options include asking friends and family if you can make use of their kitchens if they live nearby, preparing food at work or ordering takeaways for your evening meals – though this option can definitely be pricey!
Talk to your neighbours
As a courtesy it is always worth talking to your neighbours before and construction goes ahead, because while you might be prepared for the noise and disruption that construction work causes, your neighbours may not be too endeared with you if they are blindsided. Give them a realistic timeline for work to be completed and assure them that they can come and talk to you about any concerns – some of them may be out of your control, but it is good to keep communication open so that your relationship with your neighbours remains copasetic.
