Five fantastic facts about female fertility

When you look back at your school life, how much do you remember from what was taught in health class? In particular, what do you remember about female fertility? Whilst you may have covered many of the basics such as how babies are made, you may not have gone in depth about other topics such as female fertility and the major importance it has in life. There are many behaviours and conditions that affect fertility which should be well known. With this in mind, here are five fantastic facts about female fertility, advised by this IVF clinic in Wandsworth.
  1. In each cycle, women have a 30% chance of falling pregnant. This means that even if you and your partner decide to have sex at the perfect time in your cycle, there is no guarantee that you will fall pregnant. There are so many things that have to be in place to ensure that you fall pregnant. It has to be the right time of your monthly cycle, the number and health of the sperm has to be high, the egg has to be healthy and so does the lining of the womb. Every pregnancy actually comes as a miracle!
  2. Women over the age of 35 find it more difficult to fall pregnant. This is due to the fact that fertility starts to decrease by this age. This does not mean that falling pregnant is impossible at the age of 35 but it does mean that you have to pay a lot more attention to your cycle. It is recommended to seek medical advice sooner rather than later if you find it extremely difficult to fall pregnant.
  3. A woman has all of her eggs from birth. This is one of the most fascinating facts about female fertility. A female fetus has around 7 million eggs weeks before they are even born. Once the child is born, this reduces to 2 million eggs. Further on in life, When the child reaches puberty, the eggs stand at 500,000.
  4. Being underweight or overweight can have a huge effect on fertility. This is due to the metabolic function of fatty tissue in the body, which is responsible for converting testosterone into estrogen. A balanced and healthy lifestyle is one that should be sought after, especially if you are trying to fall pregnant.
  5. Sex whilst on your period can lead to pregnancy! Many have been told that sex on your period is just as safe as using contraception, but this is wrong. Some women have shorter cycles and ovulate early. Sperm that survive in the womb can then fertilise the egg. This is not highly likely but should never be disregarded.
