How to Encourage a Love of Reading at Home

Developing a love of reading is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. Reading not only supports academic success, but also builds imagination, empathy and confidence. While schools play an important role, a child’s attitude towards books is often shaped at home. Creating a positive reading culture doesn’t require grand gestures — small, consistent habits can make all the difference. How to Encourage a Love of Reading at Home

Make Reading Part of Everyday Life

Children are far more likely to enjoy reading when it feels natural rather than forced. Instead of presenting it as homework, weave reading into daily routines. Share a bedtime story, read recipes together while cooking, or look through instructions when building something. Even reading road signs or shopping lists can help younger children see that reading has purpose. When children associate books with comfort and connection — such as cuddling up with a story before bed — they begin to view reading as an enjoyable activity rather than a task.

Be a Reading Role Model

Children copy what they see. If they regularly see you reading a novel, newspaper or magazine, they understand that reading is something adults value and enjoy. Talk about what you’re reading in simple terms: “I’m enjoying this book because the characters are really interesting.” These casual conversations show that reading is not just for school, but for pleasure too. If possible, set aside a short family reading time where everyone reads their own book quietly. This shared experience can be powerful in establishing reading as a normal part of daily life.

Let Them Choose

One of the quickest ways to discourage reading is to restrict children to what we think they should read. While guidance is important, choice is key to motivation. Whether it’s comics, football magazines, fantasy novels or fact books about space, all reading counts. Visit your local library and allow your child to explore different genres. Libraries are wonderful spaces that encourage curiosity, and borrowing books keeps things fresh and exciting. When children feel ownership over their choices, they are far more likely to engage.

Create a Reading-Friendly Space

You don’t need a dedicated library at home, but having a cosy, inviting reading spot can help. A small bookshelf within easy reach, soft lighting and a comfortable chair or beanbag can make reading feel special. Keep books visible and accessible rather than stored away out of sight. Rotating books occasionally can also renew interest. Bringing out forgotten favourites often sparks excitement all over again.

Talk About Stories

Reading doesn’t end when the book closes. Ask open questions about the story: “What was your favourite part?” or “How do you think the character felt?” These discussions deepen understanding and show that stories matter. For younger children, encourage them to predict what might happen next or to retell the story in their own words. This builds confidence and comprehension while keeping the experience interactive.

Keep It Positive

Above all, avoid turning reading into a battle. If your child is tired or reluctant, keep sessions short and encouraging. Praise effort rather than ability, and celebrate small milestones. A love of reading grows over time through warmth, patience and consistency. By making books a joyful part of home life, you help open the door to lifelong learning, creativity and discovery.
